Which songs are you learning to play? (Discussion)

Seems like we have quite a few guitar players on our hands.

Which songs are you learning to play? As a guitar beginner which songs do you find easy to play and enjoy?

For me, when I started out playing the guitar I found the following songs easy and enjoyable to play:
  • The Beatles – Blackbird
  • Green Day – Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)
  • Colbie Caillat – Bubbly
  • Sixpence None the Richer – Kiss Me
  • Any Michelle Branch song

Ultimate Guitar is a great resource for tabs and chords. I even use the chords here for songs on the piano.

    Great discussion!

Let’s see… Good Riddance I’ve been trying, and Whole Wide World by Reckless Eric is fairly basic too.

I like picking up small and easy riffs, like Miss You, Discotheque, Otherside, Can’t Stop, Shiny Happy People, and probably a few others I can’t remember. These are failry fun and you can build a whole song out of them. The easiest one is This Must Be The Place (Naive Melody) by the Talking Heads, and the riff actually is the whole song and the bassline, which is why it’s called naive melody, so it’s cool.

Other than that I’ve been trying to find good solos that don’t break your fingers, and I can actually play the Red Hot Chili Pepper’s Universally Speaking solo (with slight improvements). But other solos I’ve attempted didn’t work out too well.

And I also “play” songs by sort-of doing what they sound like. Cold Turkey by John Lennon is a prime example, and it’s probably the best song I can play even though it doesn’t sound anything at all like it should.

I’ve been trying to nail this song called – “Still you turn me on”, by Emerson, Lake and Palmer – you should listen to this song – check it out on Youtube – Greg Lake on vocals – one man, one guitar – awesome!

It’s so difficult to play and sing it – both are too tough :( when you want to do them together. My dream is to be able to play Sultans of Swing , note for note, on beat :) Another song that I really like is Classical Gas (Mason Williams), anyone know how to play it?

I’m learning how to strum the guitar flamenco style. It’s hard keeping the strumming consistent but the pay-off is definitely worth it! It sounds awesome.

I also learned how to play some of the “Zorba the Greek” song. It’s pretty fun :) Here’s a fancy version of it.

That does sound really nice… but I doubt I’ll try it for a while.

In the meanwhile, I’ve been trying to perfect my Seven Nation Army. It sounds pretty simple on paper, but I’m adding alterations and solos to make it sound even better. It’s just such a great song…
