Best Rock Clips! (Discussion)

I know you’ve all been waiting for this discussion.

What are your favourite rockin’ video clips? I know you’ve got lots of them (I have too many probably). Video clips are great, because they allow the artist to transmit the message of the song on a visual level as well as on an audible one. And creativity can really hit a high note with a good clip!

I’m going to list just 1 clip per post, because doing a list wouldn’t be as effective. I’ll start with…

A recent clip actually, but one I found really great. Dani California by the Red Hot Chili Peppers. The clip itself doesn’t have much to do with the song, granted, but it’s great nonetheless. It goes through all the major genres and styles of rock, from the early Elvis days through the Beatles, and up to Nirvana and the RHCP themselves. It covers such styles as the British Punk, heavy metal, and glam rock. It’s really awesome how it all comes together at the end too… and it shows that Flea looks a lot like David Bowie when he wants to, and that’s awesome. I thought this would be good to start with… I’ll add more clip recommendations soon.

    Here’s my second video choice:

This one’s a classic. The Gorillaz’s 19-2000 video. An animated clip with the Gorillaz doing what they do best… which is apparently sing while driving a crazy highway. It’s awesome in ways only animated clips can be, and I remember seeing this one when it came out and really liking it. In my opinion, the recent Crazy Frog video is a lousy imitation. Anyway, it’s impossible not to enjoy this one!

    Next up:

U2’s Lemon. It’s a video about men. It provides subtitles for simple actions, just in case you don’t know what’s going on, such as “man singing” and “man with electric guitar turning through 360”. The simplistic black and white design is perfect with the complex sound of the song that’s been jokingly refered to as futuristic German disco. The song itself is awesome too, which doesn’t hurt. It’s a highly creative video that’s both funny and powerful.

    Number 4, it seems:

The great song called Coffee & TV by Blur. First of all the song itself is really good, especially the chorus. But the video itself is really creative and cute too. It shows how a milk carton is looking for Graham who’s gone lost. There are really sad and scary moments too, even though overall it’s pretty silly when you think about it. The ending is tragic and beatiful, so you really have to watch it. And that’s all I’m going to say for now… now I need to find a new clip for the next post.

If we’ve had Blur, we ought to have Oasis up and even it out.

Here’s the best Oasis clip ever- The Importance of Being Idle. The song itself is unbelievably awesome on its own, but the video is even better. Featuring dancer/actor Rhys Ifans as a funeral planner planning his own funeral, with cameos from the band, it sounds nice. But not only that- it’s done in those black and white old school film style, which raises the cool factor even higher. And the choreography is nice too. One of the best things that ever came out of Oasis, that’s for sure.

Coming up next- it’s R.E.M. with All the Way to Reno. The song itself is pretty cool, but the video is quite impressive. Looks like R.E.M. showed up at a random high school to shoot this clip. According to wikipedia students actually filmed this video, which I find cool. There are also a couple of really funny scenes like Stipe stealing the principal’s megaphone. Just imagine if Michael Stipe showed up at your school one day! That would be awesome.

This one is up for interpretations, not everyone would like it… Retro time! I Ran by a Flock of Seagulls. The song itself has always been pretty popular, but the video clip… not so much. I find it really great personally… it’s just so 80’s. The hair, the clothes, the smoke and mirrors. I wish I was part of the 80’s, but I’m not, so I watch this clip instead. And I’m already capable of playing that solo on my guitar, which adds to the coolness. Too bad this Scottish band had only one hit.

Time for a classic- Money for Nothing by the Dire Straits. One of the first vidoes featuring a combination of animation and real people, it was pretty advanced way back when it came out. Hard to believe it these days, since it looks pretty low-tech, but the song is still sweet. And you have to admit it, the cartoons are pretty cute.

    Another classic!

Here’s And She Was by the Talking Heads. It doesn’t make any sense, and it doesn’t have to. That’s how David Byrne’s head works, and it’s totally awesome. Actually, it’s a bit scary at some points, but that’s fine. You should give it a watch, same with all other Talking Heads videos- they’re usually a bit nuts but always creative and cool.

Looks like this is #10, unless I miscounted somewhere.

I’m going with the White Stripes, and The Hardest Button to Button. I’ve got to say, they’re just a duo really, but the White Stripes can pull off great catchy tunes, and this is one of them. The stop motion clip is quite creative, to the point where it was spoofed on the Simpsons with Jack and Meg themselves. That’s a good indication it’s a really cool clip. Plus there’s a cameo from Beck! Nice.

Thanks for the first comment on this thread, Tiffany!

Here’s a new one- I’m Shipping Up to Boston, by Dropkick Murphys. Some people say that this isn’t one of their best, since at this point they’re sort of commercialized, but I don’t care. I only found out about this band by hearing this song on the Departed (which by the way is one of my favourite movies). And it only makes sense that the video clip will feature clips from the movie! So it all fits together very nicely. Except it’s really hard to tell what the words are because they’re screaming incoherently, but oh well, I’m pretty sure the words don’t make much difference here.
