What is Bohemian Rhapsody actually about? (Discussion)

I’ve always wondered this…especially since the subject range of the lyrics is so broad and seemingly very random. He obviously would put a minimal amount of thought into these lyrics, so they must mean something to him. Of course, we’ll probably never truly know because he never told us directly. (You can listen to the song here.)

This is what Mercury once said: “I think people should just listen to it, think about it, and then make up their own minds as to what it says to them…’Bohemian Rhapsody’ didn’t just come out of thin air. I did a bit of research although it was tongue-in-cheek and mock opera. Why not?”

Do you have any interpretations of this song? Any perspectives on specific lyrics? What is “Bismillah” and “Beezelbub” and “Scaramouche”? What does “Galileo” have to do with anything? Am I asking too many questions?

I always thought this song is kind of about Spawn or a similar character.

Think about it- at the beginning the guy is doing bad stuff and feeling guilty for it. Then he gets to hell with the devil (Beelzebub and all that), makes a deal with him and comes back to Earth with a vengence and a cool guitar solo. But he’s still part human inside (the end of the song), like a cool anti-hero.

But yeah, other interpretations may fit better…

Interesting take, Oren, I’ve never even considered that before.

I guess Bohemian Rhapsody has a lot of do about disappointing his mother because homosexuality was such a stigma back then (and still is today). I guess the lyrics represent a sort of internal struggle with himself, as well as with society. They want so many different things from him, he’s being pulled apart and doesn’t know where to go.

    “Mama,life had just begun,”
“But now Ive gone and thrown it all away.”

Did he write this before or after he had AIDs? This song may be about dealing with his reaction to getting that disease, I think. Thanks for clearing up the explanation of those words, by the way, Avicster!

Well, the song was written in ‘75, when AIDS hadn’t yet been discovered. Even if he had it, he couldn’t have known it!
