Rock critics and critiques? Who do you like/dislike and why. (Discussion)

I find that when I’m looking for new (and new to me) music. I usually rely on the recommendations of friends. Every once in a while though I will read a review or a critique and really resonate with the critic. Other times, not so much. What experiences have you had?, who do you recommend?

I also wanted to make this a discussion to share links on song reviews and sites that are particularly good. One that I like is “Short Essays on Favorite Songs” from McSweeneys.net found here:

That’s a great site! I’ve just read a few essays on songs I personally like (they have a good selection there), and the personal touches add a lot. I think I’ll add some personal touches to my own list in the next few sections…

Looking for new music, I usually browse HMV and buy a Greatest Hits album of a band I know 1 song from. Sometimes I like them and sometimes I don’t, and if I do I’ll buy more albums. It’s good, because I get to support artists (Never download music!).

CBC Radio 3 is a great source to find new music. It’s free, and everything is streamed.

I go on new music sprees…. and then nothing for a few years. The last time I went on a new artist binge was thanks to Pandora, which unfortunately is now only available in the US.

What these guys did was create the music genome project and the analyzed an insane number of songs for their various characteristics. For example: One of my favourite songs is Sister Awake by the Tea Party, so type that into my personal player. Then the MGP looks at the song and it’s characteristics (male vocal, eastern influences, multiple layers of music, minor key, etc etc etc) and then suggests songs with similar characteristics. I then vote on their suggestion by giving it a thumbs up, or down and my player becomes tailored to my personal music experience.

Seriously, I’m gutted that it isn’t around anymore. IMO, it was the best thing online since LORD

I’ve just found this really great list. It’s a Rolling Stone list, but it’s a good one.

It takes the 100 top artists of all times, and each one is commented upon by an artist with a personal connection. So you can find Bono writing about Elvis Presley, and Lenny Kravitz writing about John Lennon, and even crazy stuff like Britney Spears writing about Madonna and Little Richard writing about himself.

It’s a real rock criticism from rockers… which is super cool. Check it out.
