Stick to your own thing (Discussion)

Some musicians can play 50 different instruments (not all at once… except maybe David Bowie). But when it comes to most rockers, they should stick to their own instrument.

Take a look at this great cartoon:

Vocalists shouldn’t pick up a guitar and play just because they think it makes them look cooler.

The same holds for players- you can do backing vocals, but don’t go overboard (case in point- Phil Collins, though some may argue his drumming isn’t much better than his singing).

Got any supporting/opposing examples?

They forgot Bono’s second-best guitar moment:

Bono’s Guitar fake throw, right before Until the End of the World from the Popmart Mexico DVD.

He swings his guitar around as if he’s going to throw it right into the audience… then he doesn’t, which I guess is just as well, it wouldn’t have been cool if he’d throw it and the guitar would’ve hit somebody smack on the head.

If you can play all of the instruments well (emphasis on “can” and “well”) go for it. Look at Dave Grohl of the Foo Fighters: on their debut album, he played all of the parts, save that of one guitar part, and he played them well. Now, if you can’t, don’t. So I agree: stick to your thing. Remember, though, people can have more than one “thing.”
