Everyone's favourites (Discussion)

The Rolling Stone magazine once published a list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Times (link) And judged the top 3 to be: John Lennon’s Imagine in third place, The Rolling Stones’ Satisfaction in second, and top spot went to Bob Dylan and his Like a Rolling Stone.

My questions is- you think that’s right? Do people who know anything about rock really think these are the best songs ever?

My experience shows that Stairway to Heaven should be way higher than spot 31, Hotel California does not belong at 49, and even Every Breath You Take deserves a higher spot than 84. These are some of the most popular songs I know! Easily more popular than songs like A Change is Gonna Come by Sam Cooke. Most people I know never heard of Cooke.

Personally, I don’t like this list. And I do acknowledge that my personal list doesn’t reflect everyone’s favourites in any way. By if you had to pick and choose the world’s most popular rock songs, what would they be?

(Note the significant difference here between best and most popular).

My local rock radio station had a voting contest to find the top 500 songs of all time, you can see that here:

I think voting does a better job in the “popular” aspect, lol. (Hey, how do I make it into a blue link-y thing?)

I don’t think I could make a list of songs based on popularity, I don’t really pay attention to what’s popular, but more to what’s good. However, I will agree that, popularity-based, Stairway to Heaven is way higher than 31. Like a Rolling Stone should be far lower. Satisfaction is up there. So is Hotel California, although I despise the Eagles.

Your local radio station has a good list going… but I guess you’re right, it’s hard to indicate what’s popular and what’s not. The station probably caters to a specific audience, so it’s no surprise it’s got very little Rolling Stones and John Lennon songs at the top… it would be practically impossible to get a vote going without going into specific audiences and other things like that.

To make blue links, just put some inside ” with a : afterwards, like “so”: and then put the URL right afterwards with no space.

I’d say the Rolling Stones pretty much hits it on the nail – it’s safe and predictable, but the songs they list are ones I would expect. I think they place more importance on songs which have shaped history or set precedents; rather than just being simply “good” or “listenable” or “cool”.

And I’m not completely sure why Sam Cooke would be considered rock, I’m still glad to see he’s up there. Sam Cooke is one of my favourite songs, and “A Change Is Gonna Come” is an amazing song. If you like him, I would also recommend Otis Redding…
