Your personal All-Star Band (Discussion)

oLahav saidThu, 03 Jul 2008 19:52:57 -0000 ( Link )

Here’s your chance to create an imaginary All-Star band with personal favourite rockers!

Choose a vocalist, a guitar player, a bassist, a drummer, and an optional 5th band member (keyboard? multi-instrumentalist? second guitar? extra vocals?) and show off your favourite artists!

Now imagine if this was a real thing…

But yeah, let the rock begin!

Do they need to be alive? I would love to include Frank Zappa as the guitarist…

Vocals: Scott Weiland (of Stone Temple Pilots/formerly of Velvet Revolver) – Travis Meeks (of Days of the New) would be great, but he always sounds too depressed…

Guitar: Santana – He has mastered the art of the solo.

Bass: Bootsy Collins (of P-Funk/Praxis/multiple studio bands and productions) – As much as I like Les Claypool and Flea, Bootsy’s got the best ability to adjust to different styles, so in an all-star band, I’ve got to go with him.

Drums: Dave Grohl (of Nirvana, Foo Fighters) – A good, solid, drummer. Nothing much more to it than that.

Cello: Eicca Toppinen (of Apocalyptica) – I enjoy classical music, and find it to blend well with rock music. I’m a big Apocalyptica fan, lol.

    Regretfully, I didn’t include an Irish-rock violinist…

As for a songwriter, I’d have to say Trent Reznor would be great.

No rules against dead artists whatsoever. You can also choose international ones if you want, or anything really, as long as they’re real (I mean, yeah, you can choose one of the Gorillaz members, but that’s going a bit overboard).

I’m having a bit of a hard time deciding on a couple of spots… once I’ll finish my list I’ll post it up.

Ok, ok, I made up my mind, so I’m posting it before I change it again:

Vocals- David Bowie. Sure, he doesn’t have the best voice ever… but most rock vocalist don’t. And he’s got that insane rockstar persona with crazy characters and everything… it’s Bowie all the way.

Guitar- Lindsey Buckingham. I know some people don’t like his style, but he’s a master when it comes to cool finger picking, and some of his solos are more than incredible. Plus, he can pull off nice vocals when he wants to.

Bass- hard one… I have to go with John Paul Jones. Only because you get keyboard for free… He’s a very talented multi-instrumentalist.

Drums- Larry Mullen Jr. I had to push one U2 member somewhere in there… Mullen is the most underrated drummer ever, at least during U2’s early years- just listen to Sunday Bloody Sunday.

5th member- extra guitar with John Frusciante from the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Both because of his amazing talent, and because he’s funny to watch (check out the Live in Slane Castle DVD and try to count the number of flies he must have swallowed with an open mouth).

I’m probably going to post a second group soon, there’s so many better choices than these ones.

    And, here’s my NOT group:

Vocals- David Byrne, guitar- Bono, bass- Sting, drums- Phil Collins, and backing vocals by Rod Stewart. Oh, that would be funny to watch. And it actually may not be that bad, come to think of it…

I’m gonna make my first group a gang of classic rockers and then throw together a group of modern rock gods.

Vocals – I’m gonna have to go with one of the strongest voices to ever grace our earth: Freddie Mercury (I pray you know who he performed with); he just has that ability to make you say “wow”....

Guitar – I am a sucker for ridiculous solo and shredding skills so I have to say either Steve Vai or Eddie Van Halen; both masters of the guitar and lords of rock.

Bass – Tough call there are a lot of bassists who have some serious skills but for the classic group I’m gonna say either Geddy Lee of Rush or Steve Harris of Iron Maiden, both masters of their craft.

Drums – How do you choose one man in this group? There are so many legends. Top of my list, I would have to go with one of the wildest and creative drummers ever: Keith Moon of The Who. This dude had amazing talent but was plucked from his prime.

As for a more modern list, I am just gonna pick from my favourite bands…

Vocals – No doubt about it: Howard Jones of Killswitch Engage – a master of both traditional vocals and hardcore screaming. Or Matt Bellamy of Muse – my unofficial God. No one can touch his talent with a fifty foot pole.

Guitar – I bow down to these two guys. Their unreal shred skills make me wet my pants. Herman Li of Dragonforce is the fastest guitar player I have ever seen. A true Lord of Shredding. Second has to be Oli Herbert of All That Remains, everything he plays is amazing.

Bass – Chris Wholstenholme of Muse. This dude plays the bass with his eyes closed at live shows and makes it look soooo easy. His talent is only matched by his class.

Drums – If I had to choose one guy from an epic era of drummers I would have to say: Jimmy Sullivan of Avenged Sevenfold because he dominates on the kit. This dude has insane skills and his speed is awesome. There are a lot of greats out there, but listening to a lot of A7x’s songs you can hear gut busting drums every time.

I really like your classic group Makattack89, Mercury really does have one of the best voices ever. And Keith Moon and Van Halen are awesome too.

I’ll post a current band too, with active, relatively fresh artists only! (Actually looking back on it, it’s not that fresh, but they’re all under 40).

Vocals- Easy. Alex Kapranos of Franz Ferdinand. He’s got a great voice and front-man personality.

Guitar- Jack White. Best active guitar player at the moment, come on. Sure, he’s nuts, but who cares? After Seven Nation Army, he’s allowed to be as insane as he wants.

Bass- Guy Berryman. Yeah, you’re going to laugh, but you know what- he’s the most underrated member of Coldplay. He’s got superb basslines going, especially for their early songs.

Drums- Green Day’s Tré Cool. He’s not the best, but he’s funny. That counts for a lot.

There. Does that work? Probably not, too much ego, but it would be pretty awesome.
